Parks Highway: The "Igloo" That Is Nothing Like Any Building You've Ever Seen

Foam covered building is not in use as a real hotel.
The "Igloo" On The Parks Highway in Alaska.
Not really a town, the Igloo is a big, white, foam-covered building that was meant to be a quintessentially Alaskan hotel -- but that never made the grade. It's a roadside landmark for people driving north from Anchorage to Denali National Park. The Igloo is at Mile 188.5 on the Parks Highway, and is surrounded by scenic mountains. It's got several interesting things going for it. First, it's really big. Second, it doesn't have any fire escapes. Third, it was never finished. And fourth, the Parks Highway where it's located is Athabascan Indian territory, and is not part of Alaska where real igloos were ever made.

Nevertheless, when people drive the highway, they'll frequently use the Igloo as a reference point. For example, "I saw a moose crossing the road when I was 5 miles south of Igloo..." Other than that, though, there's not much else to be said about the Igloo, except that with an absence of other buildings around, this is the only game in town. The Igloo is completely empty, and now beginning to suffer from vandalism and graffiti.
