Delta Junction: Where Mud Bog Racing Is Cool

Alaskan outdoor activities.
Mud Bog Racing in Delta Junction, Alaska.
The annual Deltana Fair in Delta Junction, on the Tanana River, is the site of a strange sporting event. Local guys jockey to win a slap-dash, mud-slopped competition called the Mud Bog Race. Contestants rev up their rigs, and prove their mettle by following a long mud-filled racetrack at full speed, as their friends cheer them on from the sidelines.

One reason this might be popular here is that it's an unusual confluence of two different cultures, both of whom are intent on making themselves known as people who can handle a dirty job -- military men who work at nearby Fort Greely, and farmers and ranchers who live in the surrounding area.
